Foods You Should Avoid in 2013

A new year always begins with the promise of new hope, of better days ahead. And better days do come with better health. Today we’ll be talking about some of the most poisonous foods lurking in your diet that you must resolve to avoid this year. We’ll also suggest a few healthier alternatives that you can include in your diet.

#1 Sugar

Historically, sugar was used in its unrefined, raw form, taken directly from sugarcane juice. Clarified juice was boiled to a crystalline solid, broken down into gravelly masses and consumed as sugar. Today, however, much of the commercially available sugar is chemically processed and refined. According to the United States National Institutes of Health, such refined sugar provides “empty calories” because the refining process removes almost all vitamins and minerals, drastically depleting the nutritional value of the sugar.
The American Heart Association differentiates between intrinsic or naturally occurring sugar, which refers to the sugar found naturally as an integral constituent of fruits, vegetables, and milk products, and extrinsic or added sugar, which refers to sucrose or other refined sugars added to soft drinks, food, and fruit drinks.Their report suggests that there may be evidence that high sugar consumption could worsen atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), diabetes control, and contribute to nutritional deficiencies.

Alternatives

Jaggery is the unrefined, raw form of sugar that was used in ancient times. It is widely used in India and South Asia as a sweetener. Jaggery retains the minerals, nutrients and vitamins present in cane juice, and it is used in Ayurveda – the ancient Indian medical system – to treat dry cough, improve digestion and to cure a host of other health issues. Today, super-phosphate is added in some types of jaggery as well. White, neat-looking jaggery is super-phosphate jaggery. It should be avoided. Instead, go for the “ugly”, dark-looking jaggery.
Honey is also a wonderful substitute for sugar. Daily consumption of honey can do a lot, especially for people with excess mucus problems and asthma. Honey is very good for the heart and brain, and keeps the mind alert.
Honey has different impacts on the human system depending on how it has been consumed, whether raw, mixed with cold water, or mixed with tepid water. When honey is mixed with tepid water and consumed every day, it raises the red blood cell (RBC) count in the circulatory system, enhances the blood’s hemoglobin levels, which takes care of anemic conditions.
Honey should not be cooked. That makes it poisonous. Mix honey with tepid or warm water, not in boiling hot water. Honey should also not be given to children under the age of one.

#2 Milk

milk
Only children below three have the necessary enzymes to digest milk completely. Except for a few regions in the globe, milk is mostly indigestible for a majority of adults worldwide. The undigested milk is mucous-forming and causes lethargy. Yes, milk has traditionally been believed to be a good source of calcium. But there are several other good sources as well.

Alternatives

Whole Grains (see below), lentils and nuts are an excellent alternative to milk, in order to get the daily dietary requirement of calcium. For example:
Peanuts are a complete diet by itself. In India, many yogis go on a 100% peanut diet because it is a complete food by itself, if it is eaten raw. Peanuts must be soaked for a minimum of six hours in water, which takes away certain aspects which in Ayurveda are called Pitta. If you eat peanuts without soaking them, it tends to cause rashes and nausea.
Horsegram is good source of dietary iron and calcium and it is among the richest vegetarian source of protein. However, the calcium and iron are combined into certain chemical compounds, rendering them un-absorbable by the body. Germination of the horsegram is a simple method of food processing that increases the availability of iron and calcium, resulting in increased nutritive value. Sprouted horsegram is also digested much more easily. Horsegram tends to increase the level of heat in the body, which can help tide over coughs and colds during cloudy and rainy weather. However, when the sun is up, if the horsegram is heating the body up, it must be balanced by eating sprouted green gram.

#3 Refined Grains

A grain in its natural state is structurally composed of three components – endosperm, bran, and germ. The germ contains the plant embryo. The endosperm is the seed’s food supply, and the bran is the protective covering that surrounds the germ and the endosperm. The primary component of the endosperm is starch, which serves as the major energy supply for the germinating seed. The endosperm however, is relatively scarce when it comes to vitamins, minerals, fibre, or phytochemicals. The bran and germ in contrast, are rich in a majority of these nutrients including B vitamins, amino acids, phytochemicals, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and iron.
However, before grains are commercially sold, they are often refined to improve texture and shelf life. Known as refined grains, these grains go through a process where the bran and the germ are separated and discarded, leaving only the starchy endosperm. The result is a grain from which most of the nutrients, minerals and dietary fibre have been lost.
A majority of the grains sold commercially today, go through some process of refining. Common examples include white rice and white flour.

Alternatives

Whole grain products such as brown rice and whole wheat are increasingly available these days. Whole grains are rich in many components that have been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. Most of these components are found in the germ and bran, which are more or less totally removed during the processing of refining.
It is important to ensure that our diet includes more than just one or two cereals. A variety of highly nutritious, yet oft-neglected cereals are available, which can be important components of our diets.
Finger millet, also known as ragi in Hindi,  is considered among the most nutritious of cereals. Finger millet’s protein content has high biological value, so it is easily incorporated into the body. Several amino acids crucial to human health are found in the grain. Some of these amino acids are deficient in most other cereals. Dietary minerals are also found in abundance, especially Calcium which is available in concentrations five to thirty times greater than other cereals. Phosphorus and iron content is also high. Finger millet can be made into rotis, dosas, porridge, cookies and even tasty laddus.
Pearl millet, also known as bajra in Hindi, and kambu in Tamil, has high levels of vitamins B, and dietary minerals potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc copper and manganese. It is gluten free and is ideal for those with wheat allergies. Pearl millet has been found to be nutritionally superior to rice and wheat, and a study based on research in India showed that pearl millet and pulses is somewhat better at promoting human growth than a wheat diet.

#4 Tea/Coffee

Tea and coffee are nervous stimulants. Nervous stimulants create a sense of energy for a short while, after which the body’s energy levels drop. Consuming too much of nervous stimulants destroys stamina in the long run, and affects the body’s ability to store energy.

Alternatives

Drinking a glass of Ashgourd (winter melon) juice in the morning would make you very energetic and also keep the nerves very calm. Daily consumption of ashgourd greatly enhances one’s intellectual capabilities. But asthmatics and people who are susceptible to cold and cough should add some honey or pepper to ashgourd juice. This neutralizes the cooling effect of ash gourd to some extent.
This Lemon-Ginger Tea recipe could also leave you feeling fresh and invigorated, without the side effects of caffeine:
Boil 4.5 cups of water in a saucepan. As the water boils, crush a 2-inch piece of fresh ginger with about 25 to 30 Tulasi (Holy Basil) leaves. Add the paste to the boiling water along with 2 Tsp of dried coriander seeds (optional). Continue to boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Strain the tea into cups and add a Tsp of lime juice and honey/jaggery to taste. Serve hot!
As important as it is to make sure you get a good balance of nutrition in your daily meals, you need to remember not to get paranoid about the food you eat.
Don’t become a food freak – “I will not eat this, I will not eat that. I have to eat like this, I have to eat like that.” No, eating joyously is more important than eating properly. Food has influences on you but it is not the deciding factor. The true joy of eating is that you are conscious of some other life willing to become a part of you, to merge and mingle with your own life and become you. This is the greatest pleasure that a human being knows, that in some way, something that is not him has become willing to become a part of him.” – Sadhguru
So focus on the foods that leave you filled with energy and try to avoid the foods that make you lethargic. We wish you a happy and healthy year ahead!

Budget 2011: Tax relief for individuals, inflation 'a concern'

As he had highlighted in the Economic Survey tabled in Parliament last Friday, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee while presenting the Union Budget on Monday said growth in 2010-11 has been broad-based but inflation continues to remain a concern.
Mukherjee however exuded confidence that the RBI's monetary policy would lead to moderation in inflation in the coming months. Mukherjee also put emphasis on increasing agricultural productivity to curb food inflation.
The Finance Minister did not disappoint individual tax payers either and raised the threshold income tax limit to Rs. 1.8 lakh from the present Rs. 1.6 lakh. This now becomes uniform for both men and women.
He brought down the eligibility age for senior citizen's tax exemption to 60 years from 65. Mukherjee also announced that exemption for senior citizens would be Rs. 2.5 lakh from the present Rs. 2.4 lakh.
He also announced a special category of tax-paying senior citizens. Those 80 or above would get an exemption of Rs. 5 lakh, he said.
Mukherjee also said last year had been a remarkable fiscal year and that the Indian economy was expected to grow steadily at 9 per cent.
Mukherjee said: "I see Budget 2011-12 as a transition towards more transparent and a result-oriented economic management."

Disney buys Indian-American's social networking site

Washington: Entertainment giant Walt Disney has acquired Togetherville, a social network for elementary school-age children founded by an Indian American, to strengthen its offerings in online gaming.

Togetherville seeks to mimic the experiences of social networks such as Facebook, but in a way that's protective of children younger than 10 and allows for parental supervision.
Disney buys Indian-American's social networking site

The site lets children connect with their real-world friends in its virtual neighbourhood, according to founder and Chief Executive Mandeep S. Dhillon.

"Togetherville is very focused on trying to really reflect what the adult community has been doing on the Web and build a real online experience that adults enjoy for kids, but do it in a safe, COPPA-compliant way," he said referring to the safeguards established by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

Dhillon told the Los Angeles Times the acquisition, the terms of which were not disclosed, was completed Feb 18.

The Togetherville transaction is the latest digital acquisition by Disney, which in July bought social gaming company Playdom for $563 million and mobile application developer Tapulous.

Dhillon said he set out to create a safe online network where his three children - ages 9 and younger - could learn and play while under the watchful eyes of their parents.

The site offers a range of entertainment, including games that enable kids to have virtual snowball fights as well as music videos and animation snippets that have been prescreened as age-appropriate. Members of the community can also give virtual gifts such as greeting cards and works of art.

"What we try to do is reflect what kids' real-world experiences are with the online environment," Dhillon said.

Parents, meanwhile, can control whom the kids interact with; and Togetherville ensures that kids can't leave the protected confines of the network to go to another site.

Dhillon said he was excited by the Disney purchase, noting, "They're one of the most amazing family brands on Earth."

Disney issued a statement Friday confirming that Togetherville will become a wholly owned subsidiary of the company's interactive media group.

Ayodhya Verdict postponed to next week

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed for a week the Ayodhya title suit verdict that was due to be pronounced by Allahabad High Court on Friday and will hear the plea for deferment of the judgment next Tuesday.

The Court issued notices to the contesting parties on the petition filed by retired bureaucrat Ramesh Chand Tripathi challenging the order of the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court order refusing to defer the verdict in the 60-year-old Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit dispute.
Ayodhya Verdict postponed to next week

It posted the matter for further hearing on September 28.

A Bench comprising Justices R V Raveendran and H L Gokhale stayed the verdict for a week following conflicting views over the issue of entertaining the petition challenging the High Court order.

Justice Raveendran was of the view that the special leave petition filed by Tripathi should be dismissed while Justice Gokhale, on the other hand, was of the opinion that a notice should be issued for exploring the option of settlement.

However, Justice Raveendran, who was heading the Bench, preferred to go by the opinion of Justice Gokhale.

In the order, Justice Raveendran said, "When one of the Judges has a difference of opinion then the tradition is to issue notice."

Notice was also sent to the Attorney General by the Supreme Court.

A bench of the apex court comprising Justices Altmas Kabir and A K Patnaik had on Wednesday declined to hear urgently the plea to postpone the Ayodhya title suit verdict.

While refusing to hear the petition filed by retired bureaucrat Tripathi, the bench had said that it did not have the 'determination' to take up the issue and added that it will be listed before another Bench.

Mukul Rohatgi, senior counsel appearing for Tripathi, said the Supreme Court may give a healing touch by attempting a last-ditch effort at mediation.

He said it was possible that in the face of Supreme Court notices the rival parties may sit across to find an amicable solution.

Rohatgi said that next Tuesday his side would try to tell the court that the matter of judgement should be deferred so that religious, political and national leaders could try and work out a solution.

He also said it was not a matter of just 10 or 20 parties in the case but related to lakhs and crores of people and the mediation could result in some way out.

Tripathi had on Wednesday moved the apex court five days after the High Court's Lucknow bench rejected his petition for deferring the verdict and to allow mediation to find a solution to the contentious dispute.

The Allahabad High Court had also imposed "exemplary costs" of Rs 50,000, terming Tripathi's effort for an out-of-court settlement of the dispute as a "mischievous attempt."

The petition filed by Tripathi sought some time to allow mediation among the parties and also challenged the costs.

Tripathi, in his plea before the apex court, claimed that the verdict might disturb communal harmony and lead to violence in the country.

In the petition filed through advocate Sunil Jain, he cited several reasons for deferment of the verdict, which he said would be in "public interest" in view of the apprehension of communal flare up, upcoming Commonwealth Games, elections in Bihar and violence in Kashmir Valley and Naxal-hit states.

The petition had feared that there would be inadequate security personnel in Uttar Pradesh to provide security.

Tripathi had also referred to an earlier order of the Court on July 27 last that parties concerned are at liberty to approach the Officer on Special Duty for formation of the bench if there was any possibility of disposal of the dispute or arrival at an understanding through consensus.

One of the three judges in the Lucknow bench, however, disagreed with the majority order of September 17 rejecting the plea for deferring the Ayodhya verdict to allow mediation and gave a dissenting opinion that an amicable settlement could have been explored in the protracted legal wrangle.

Justice Dharam Veer Sharma, while not concurring with the view of the other two judges - Justice S U Khan and Justice Sudhir Agarwal - also said in his dissenting judgment that he wasn't consulted when the three-judge bench gave the order while dismissing the plea for mediation.
